Teignmouth is set along the coast between Torquay and Dawlish and boasts a beautiful, traditional seafront that has the same charm and presence as the picture postcards of days gone by. As you walk along this beautiful promenade you'll find the Victorian pier with its ice-creams and buckets and spades for sale as well as café's offering traditional cream teas whilst admiring the beautiful views across the sea. The local town offers a range of well known high street shops as well as smaller independent sellers from greengrocers to butchers. With its narrow streets and alleys you're sure to find those specific items that you are looking for. Teignmouth offers a range of traditional pubs and bars as well as a large selection of fish and chip restaurants and take-away. The nearby larger towns of Plymouth and Exeter can be reached within 30 to 50 minutes and are easily accessible by train. The nearby town of Newton Abbot offers the larger out of town supermarkets and its famous Newton Abbot Race Course with a variety of events. Teignmouth was invaded by the French in 1690 but recovered with the help of tourism generated by Teignmouth becoming the second health resort in Devon. Affluent Victorians throughout the 19th Century saw a great many businesses and buildings developed in the town. Teignmouth is surrounded by towns and villages full of sporting and leisure activities guaranteed to keep even the most hard to please visitor happy.
The Docks at Teignmouth have seen exports from Dartmoor such as clay and granite quarried from Dartmoor and surrounding areas. The docks are an active part of the teign estuary life and ships are regularly shown in and out of the mouth of the estuary by the teignmouth pilot.
There are a great wealth of outdoor activities available to people living in Teignmouth from the watersports related to living on the coast to mountain-biking walking, swimming fishing and sailing. Teignmouth has its share of public houses and one of the best is the ship on backbeach which is full of local characters. Carlinos is also a great place to enjoy the mediteranian like cafe culture with views fom the balcony out to sea.
